Lew Hollander says it's not easy, but he has been doing this race for 20 years. It's called tenacity, endurance and perseverance. He wants to live to 120 or more. He mentioned hell so he is aware of it, but used it in different terms.
This has been his life and his goals...to train and compete. Admirable, but what does Jesus say about running the race and physical training as opposed to spiritual training?
I Timothy 4:8 For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.
Jesus tells us to run our spiritual race...as an athlete trains
1 Corinthians 9:24-27 (KJV)
24 Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain.
25 And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.
26 I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:
27 But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.
There has to be a purpose to our running...
Hebrews 12:2 (KJV)
2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
2 Timothy 2:5 And if a man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully.
2 Timothy 4:7-8 I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:8 Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.
There is no athlete in the world that can outdo God when it comes to providing endurance without measure and it doesn't have to come from drinking an energy drink...
31 But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
Philippians 4:13 (KJV)
13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
