Hook, line and sinker was first expressed in 1865 referring to a fish who swallowed the baited hook, leaden sinker and the whole fishing line. It was total trickery. The fish thought I’ve landed a nice meal but what the fish got was further from the truth.
How can diversion play a part in deception?
Anything that sways our attention from Jesus is a diversion. It leads us on different paths straying from the truth. It takes us on a change of course; in this case God’s narrow path. It detours our steps into different areas away from being grounded and rooted in Him.
It’s like placing ourselves in the stands of a three ring circus. Our heads turn side to side in hopes of not missing one ounce of entertainment. Everything in lights captures our attention but the author of Light, the Light of the world.
Our minds do a dramatic turn of events into temporary avenues of self indulgence and self seeking pursuits. We follow an endless array of distractions to fulfill our souls at whatever cost. We never rest at the feet of Jesus for very long, only to ask for things that benefit our sustained pampering.
Deception influences our love for God and creates strongholds that retain mastery over our desires. We replace the word of God for personal justification and rationalization. We turn our eyes towards the diverted paths becoming decoys to distract, mislead, beguile and lead astray our pure devotion to our Savior.
It’s a world that creates whatever you want it to be. It morphs into mirages of springs in the desert except these springs have masked the bitter end. But the taste brings you back for more without even testing to see whether it be good or evil. Compromise is no longer compromise but a privilege and a right to keep one on their throne.
Diversions are at every turn, never do they say danger, stop, do not enter rather they invite all to venture in. Promising hope, treasures, soul filled pleasures, feasts to delight for the greatest to the least. It’s all free for those who choose not to lose their life and take up their cross.
Mark 8:36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
Matthew 10:39 He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.
Matthew 7:13-14 Enter ye at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
Proverbs 4:27 Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil.
Deuteronomy 5:32 Ye shall observe to do therefore as the Lord your God hath commanded you: ye shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left.
John 8:12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
